Sustainability

Under the leadership of the United Nations, the global community is seeking to combat climate change in a binding and effective manner. With the Paris Agreement on climate change, it set the clear goal of working together to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

With the European Green Deal, the European Union followed suit and launched its “Fit for 55” measures in 2021. The plan calls for CO2 emissions to be 55 percent lower than in 1990 by 2030.

Sustainability and digital technologies

We believe that the ecological and digital transformations are inseparably linked. And we are convinced that digitalisation plays a central role in climate protection.

Within the framework of our field of focus sustainability, we are conducting research into the potentials and benefits of digital technologies for business, society and the environment. How can they make a concrete contribution to achieving net-zero emissions? And which potentially climate-damaging challenges must be solved? In that effort, we focus on aspects like:

  • the benefits of data for the green transition
  • the climate efficiency of IT technologies and data centres
  • the climate-neutral transformation of specific sectors
  • the circular economy
  • smart cities, smart mobility and smart farming
